JAKARTA (IFT) - The government asked PT International Nickel Indonesia Tbk (INCO) to present the company's long-term plan related to the construction of a nickel smelter in the Bahodopi block at Central Sulawesi. Thamrin Sihite, Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the presentation of the company's strategic work plan is aimed at determining the clarity and continuity of the project.

According to Thamrin, International Nickel should present the plan on Wednesday, August 17, 2011. But he suspects of a cancellation since the company is not ready.

He admits the construction of the smelter is not easy, but he remains optimistic that the company will meet its targets.

Central Sulawesi Provincial Government demanded International Nickel to fulfill its commitment.Based on the work contract, International Nickel has to build a smelter at the latest by 2010. But due to the delay, the Central Sulawesi Provincial Government asked the company to partially restore the land concession.

The management of International Nickel said they are still doing pre-feasibility studies.
The company has signed two separate memoranda of understanding (MoU), with a steel company Baosteel Resources Co. Ltd. and Pan China International, to obtain a final feasibility study.

The Bahodapi project is one of the company's efforts to increase production capacity to 90 thousand tons by 2015. Last year, International Nickel produced about 76 thousand tons.
